Critics Consensus

The kinetic camerawork and brutal over-the-top gore that made Dario Argento famous is on full display, but the addition of a compelling, complex story makes Deep Red a masterpiece.

Director Dario Argento provokes excruciating suspense but gets carried away with bloody flourishes. As ever, Hemmings is awfully convincing. Go to Full Review

Argento, who's no Hitchcock, manufactures suspense with flashy camerawork, loud noises and pounding music. Then, all is garnished generously with gore. Credibility, which comes in a distant second, flies out the window in the process. Go to Full Review

Deep Red serves as the quintessential Dario Argento film, full of fantastically surreal...madness, anchored by dazzling cinematography, disturbing yet insidiously fun murder sequences, and the first of many banger [Goblin] scores. Go to Full Review

Wayne K @WayneKelso 3 days ago Deep Red suffers from an overextended runtime, clumsy editing and a tone that’s constantly undermined by its own soundtrack. The film is supposed to have some basis in the world of music, hence the song choices, but the scenes of supposed suspense are undercut by bouncy jazz that renders them more funky than creepy. The best and most affecting moments are when there’s no music whatsoever, but even then the momentum is harmed by overlong sequences of characters walking around in dark rooms. There’s some great imagery and frightening moments, the best being an encounter with a robotic doll. Also the killer reveal, one of the pivotal moments in a murder mystery, is underwhelming since we’ve spent so little time with the characters and their motivation is unconvincing. Also the first of their deaths, while it likely wasn’t supposed to be, is utterly hilarious. It’s a very well made and shot film but for me the formula has been done much better elsewhere. See more Mario M @MarioMacis Jun 16, 2026 Dario Argento’s Deep Red is a horror masterpiece, and one of the great achievements of the genre. From the very beginning, the film creates an atmosphere that is deeply unsettling, disturbing. The plot keeps on edge until the end. What makes the movie so powerful is not just the mystery, but the way Argento builds fear visually and rhythmically. The photography is extraordinary, the editing is sharp and precise, and the violence has a genuinely visceral quality. There is real gore here, but it never feels cheap; it is part of the film’s nightmarish intensity. The acting is excellent, and the soundtrack by Goblin is simply unforgettable. It gives the movie an energy and a sense of dread that stay with you long after it is over.
