Cameron C @cameronjohnchapman 45 min ago An absolutely gorgeous film! Shades of Days of Heaven, Meek's Cutoff, or even Red Dead Redemption with its shallow depth of field, 3rd person, documentary style, closely following the cast through the landscape. I loved the way it spans across time in the American west only to circle back to its Balkan roots in the end, just wonderful execution! I'll definitely be referencing this in future episodes of the Horses on Film Podcast. Especially as we get into some of the more modern entries from the list, but also the few female directed entries and even some of the more independent efforts like, The Settlers, Chloé Zhao's The Rider, again Meek's Cutoff, or Nia DaCosta's Little Woods. I mean, if you want Horses on film, this is Horses on film! See more Jenna C @RT92165819 1 day ago Finally, a Western that joins the rare female gaze of a filmmaker like Jane Campion but makes it all their own. Biliana & Marina Grozdanova’s Immigrant Western "Eastern Western" builds its world, tension and audience trust by earning character relationships instead of bludgeoning us with the genre's often gratuitous violence. When the full danger comes, we are totally invested in the characters and the verisimilitude of the time period. It is earned. A beautifully chaptered, full-circle experience that walks the line between a fresh and deeply-rooted narrative imagination and a confident documentarian's authenticity. The Western never truly dies, it just takes new forms as times change. Whether it be deconstruction, reconstruction, revisionist, naturalistic, neo, acid, spaghetti, Western disguised as another genre, or whatever the hell Eddington is, we'll always find new ways to load six bullets into a revolver. Guns will never keep you warm, and they can't even keep you safe, anymore. Eastern Western follows immigrant father and widower, Igor, as he hunts and takes care of his son in the snowy mountains of Montana, where much of the film was shot on location. He's approached by his friend Duncan, who offers him work, and is met with the hard decision of moving West or staying at his cabin where his wife is buried. He is convinced to sell so that he can give his son a more affluent future, and thus begins Igor's journey. See more Heidi S @RT10369955 2 days ago I saw this at the Bozeman Film Festival and thought it was phenomenal. The acting, pacing, storyline -- all of that was great -- but what stuck the most were the scenes with no words-- the horses, the bear, the times where characters were listening, or watching, or grieving, or struggling. It's a very authentic and touching film. I'll watch it again for sure. See more Joseph K @Kilo5YMD 5 days ago A moving story told well with an immigrant thread from Eastern Europe to Western US and back. See more Nikolay S @RT52317845 Oct 2, 2026 I really enjoyed Eastern Western. I watched it at the European premiere and liked it so much that I went to watch it again the next day. The story is very interesting and different from what I expected. It kept me interested and I wanted to see how it would end. The nature and landscapes are amazing, and the camera work is also really good. Of course, it is not a perfect movie, but I really enjoyed it. I normally don't watch the same movie twice in two days, so that probably says enough about my experience with this one. Definitely worth watching! See more Read all reviews
