Paul Edgecomb walks the mile with a variety of cons. He has never encountered someone like John Coffey, a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey has the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seems to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul begins to question whether Coffey is truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

The simple fable can't stand such scrutiny. More pivotally, the weight given to each moment lends The Green Mile a ponderousness that works against the emotions the story seems to want to plug into. Go to Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader Apr 8, 2011
Much of the three-hour movie takes place in the prison, but the resonant characterization, expansive plotting, and judicious use of exterior locations and flashbacks turn the walls into windows. Go to Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Dec 28, 2010

At times, you notice The Green Mile tugging your heartstrings. But aside from a moment or two over the course of three hours, the viewer gives in, entrenched in the proceedings and deeply affected by the spell of these characters. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Dilettante 7 @RT82395896 3 days ago Tend to agree with the audience more than the critics. Emotionally powerful, effective weeper. Old Yeller meets King Kong. Superb casting. Hanks has an excellent screenplay to work with. Duncan was a heartbreaker. Too long? A very few weak spots, but I didn't want it to be over. I usually don't like it when King telegraphs his punches; i think it robs the action of its surprise, but here it works: comedy and empathy against the dread of what might, and does, happen. It's OK to cry. See more Kato J @RT19499579 Oct 6, 2026 Cried for 2 days Absolutely amazing See more Treyvon E @RT79823943 Oct 5, 2026 Great!!
