Critics Consensus

Disturbing, controversial, but entirely engrossing, Hard Candy is well written with strong lead performances, especially that of newcomer Elliot Page. A movie that stays with the viewer long after leaving the theater.

A cracking little thriller which makes you think even as it's keeping you on the edge of your seat. It's not always easy viewing, but Hard Candy is an intelligent, challenging film which deserves to be seen. Go to Full Review

Alec H @alechbt 6 days ago Hard Candy is the kind of film that creates genuine discomfort from beginning to end. The subject matter is already extremely heavy, and somehow the ending manages to make the whole experience feel even more disturbing. I barely took notes while watching because the tension and moral discomfort kept me completely locked in. I’m still torn on the use of shaky camera during the more intense scenes. I understand the intention, and I read it as a way of externalizing the instability and madness of both characters, which works thematically. At the same time, the visual effect itself made me physically uncomfortable in a way that sometimes pulled me out of the scene. Still, it’s a very strong film, carried by its performances, tension, and the genuinely unsettling dynamic between its two central characters. See more Oz S @Ozsoffy Oct 5, 2026 A very interesting psychological thriller built around a small cast and a LOT of dialogue. Most of the movie feels like a psychological chess match, with the characters talking, testing each other, and constantly trying to shift the balance of power. It is a very delicate subject, and the movie does a good job of making you uncomfortable while keeping you curious about what will happen next. I really liked how focused and contained it was. The two lead performances carry most of the movie, and there is enough tension to keep the conversation from becoming just two people talking in a room. My only issue is that some of the emotional highs and lows felt a little artificial, and I sometimes wanted a bit more development or progression. Still, it is a smart, unusual, and memorable thriller that definitely gives you something to chew on. See more Joe S @HorrorCritic96 Aug 12, 2026 God awful acting and one of the easiest storylines to predict I have ever seen. Key details are left about about Jeff and "Hayley's" acting is so poor it makes me almost want to root for the villain. 1/10, I would give it a zero but at least I managed to get through the entire trash movie See more Mark C. @mrpiggy1992 May 21, 2026 Patrick and Elliott at their best See more Downriver R @Downriver Apr 10, 2026 This is I wasn't expecting to be as good as it was. I've seen this a few times now and it still holds water. Awsome acting by Patrick wilson. See more chen X @Sanguinrik Mar 27, 2026 No logic. Awkward camera work. Awkward dialogue. The characterization is rubbish. The enforcer is not righteous enough, and the punished isn't evil enough. The camera's focus is extremely odd. No one wants to see the director's self-rightrous pacing. See more Read all reviews
