Critics Consensus

Well-shot exploitation that has less purpose and utility than in 1978.

Although it would be interesting to see a stunt like this get pulled off in real life, I Spit on Your Grave needs major plot fixes and a redo.

It's better made, more plausible than the original, the sexual violations less drawn out, the vengeance more violent and elaborate.

Audiences who like the spectacle of men being tortured and women being raped may well be the same audiences. For them, this film offers a two-for-one deal.

A button pushing rape revenge with solid practical effects. The revenge-heavy back half strains credibility, but there's still something satisfying about Jennifer carve her pound of flesh from these disgusting men.

Trades in the grimy nature of the original for something less visually upsetting, while still sticking to the horrendous nature of that unsettling premise.

This remake of the controversial 1978 video nasty does little to address the issues with the original film, yet spends less screen time on the sexual assault and more on the violent revenge.

An extremely brutal revenge horror that was uncomfortable and hard to stomach, which was what it set out to be, not for the faint of heart.

i feel like they could have put more effort and time into the revenge screen time, than in the other act.

Was entertaining. Wasn’t as brutal of a watch as everyone makes out, frustrating sure

The first one really stands out in the series — raw, uncomfortable, and oddly focused in its simplicity. It leans into a strong female-led revenge arc before the later entries started stacking up clichés like they were collectibles. There’s a grim kind of clarity to it: no glossy over-explaining, no over-stylized detours, just a brutal setup and an equally relentless response. Not "fun" viewing, but definitely the one that still has the most bite — before the formula started repeating itself with diminishing returns.
