Each story is impressive, as is the way they all connect at the end. The country's cultures are interesting. I was shocked by the ending. Wow, I really love figs. But it’s also exceptionally constructed filmmaking. Incendies isn’t really about discovering a family’s secret. It’s about discovering what war has done to that family—and realizing that sometimes the past doesn’t stay in the past. And that final revelation? Absolutely devastating. The pacing is excessively slow, and the characters never feel fully developed—they serve the plot more than they feel like real people. I have no problem with slow cinema; in fact, I love quiet moments when they deepen the characters and the story. Here, however, they often felt more like an attempt to create an intellectual, arthouse atmosphere than genuine emotional engagement. A missed opportunity, because the story had the potential to become a truly unforgettable human thriller. The narrative progresses with frequent flashbacks that at time can be disorienting if you are not familiar with Arabic facial features and you confuse the mother with her daughter. The story includes a very complicated family situation and the senseless violence that has affected the Middle East, which unfortunately continues to the present day. For this reason, I assume that it was easy to find destroyed villages to act as scenery. Very well photographed and interpreted.
