Critics Consensus

Lurid but acted with gusto, Indecent Proposal has difficulty keeping it up beyond its initial titillating premise.

Not once in the whole silly exercise does he approximate a genuine emotion. Unable to dramatize marital love, he sells it, as if he were pitching perfume. Having nothing credible to play, Moore and Harrelson strike poses of love and anguish.

It is artificial and manipulative, and in the real world this sort of thing would never happen in this way, but then that's why we line up at the ticket window: We want to leave the real world, for a couple of hours, anyway.

Indecent Proposal's seeming certainty over the profundity of its conceit winds up becoming its fatal flaw. Quite simply, it doesn't present that much of a dilemma.

I'm surprised to see this movie poorly rated by both critics and the general audience. I've always enjoyed it, both the premise and the acting. It contains one of my favorite movie quotes: Gentleman, now is the time for men of good will to take leave of one another."

One of the surprise hits of 1993. A movie that I loved and has since been parodied and remade several times. Even in another woody harrelson film they do a little parody ( King Pin). This is one of only a few redford movies I enjoy. Harrelson and Moore are great together. Demi is gorgeous and it is clearly one of her best performances. Tim Treakle

A million dollars for a struggling couple if the wife agrees to sleep with a billionaire? Would you do it? Will your marriage survives? That what this film makes you answer and I greatly enjoyed the cast and director for giving me a great watch to ponder my answer.
