This remarkable slice of cinema is some sort of damn near perfect film, as ridiculous the idea of that is. I don't really give a care, it knocked me out. This is a long-lived in house; this is well worn in shoes, with shredded soles and frayed laces where aglets used to sleep; flop, crinkle, sag and bop. A weekend away in Paris, where the city of lights becomes a setting for encounters, attacks (verbal and even physical), reflection, desire unfulfilled but love scrambling madly to stay afloat in a sea of (yes, I will) ennui, a lake of flakes. The near-constant swinging of Meg's moods, moments of Nick's self-pitying, questioning himself and his marriage, their open admonishments and admissions- these are the broken little palaces of life and monogamy. Is she bipolar? Tripolar? Are they breaking up? Or is this the ebb & flow, the familiarity breeding its contempt, the winging and wagging that will make it all bare-able from now on? Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan are astonishing as this very authentic, almost too fully realized couple. They maintain this brilliance with their keen skills, but the ingenious, perceptive writing of Hanif Kureishi make it all the easier. Its director, Roger Michell, hits all the notes right, letting the city, the script, and his grand lead actors fill it all in. Plus, there's Jeff Goldblum being endlessly, helplessly Jeff Goldblum. I am Jack's jealous ego. 4 stars See more 09/30/2020 It took a little while, but I found myself immersed in Nick and Meg's relationship and their romantic Paris adventure. Jeff Goldblum was the only actor I recognized and he was wonderful. This movie showed a more realistic portrait of a couple on vacation than I've ever seen. It reminded me of the many wonderful trips I took with my husband which made some scenes bittersweet. The background music was Nick Drake, who was one of my husband's favorite singers. Normally I am turned off by a lot swearing (particularly the F word) but it didn't bother me that much. Good writing, acting and absolutely gorgeous scenery made up for it. Looking forward to watching it again See more dave d @RT34924333 08/29/2020 Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan are an older married couple on vacation in Paris and the characters they play are authentic and emblematic of married life. Then Jeff Goldblum shows up and energizes a movie that needed a bit of spunk for my taste. This is a romantic, yet subtle British comedy with that underlying sense of sadness. It's totally worth watching for any of the three main characters, but if you're a fan of just one, this is a must. The film tackles some really difficult issues and it won me over.
