Critics Consensus

A coolly constructed mystery revolving around a character who's inscrutable to a fault, Marnie finds Hitchcock luring audiences deeper into the dark.

Penelope Houston Sight & Sound Dec 22, 2025
Hitchcock cast his “discovery” of The Birds, ‘Tippi’ Hedren; and there is something almost brutal in the way he ruthlessly drives his inexperienced leading lady at the hurdles of this far from easy part. Go to Full Review TIME Staff TIME Magazine Apr 28, 2020
Hitchcock's elegant cinematic style, evident here and there, seems wasted in a melange of banal dialogue, obtrusively phony process shots, and a plot that congeals more often than it thickens. Go to Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker Sep 21, 2015

A Hitchcock melodrama that starts off with a certain psychological suspense as it builds its mystery with a solid performance by Tippi Hedren, but which, strangely, becomes hopelessly dull. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Penelope Gilliatt Observer (UK) Mar 6, 2024
There are many evil twinges of perception in the film, both in the dialogue and in the direction, for Hitch at his most coarse is still an alert manipulator, but he has made far better melodramas than this. Go to Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media Apr 12, 2023

The compelling, well-constructed narrative is a showcase of contradictions, not all of them deliberate. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad Sep 14, 2026 Marnie = a 3.5 Star Movie See more thiago S @Thiagostone Apr 28, 2026 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Tim S @RT06687248 Jul 24, 2025 Not considered by many to be Hitchcock at his best, it is an amazingly interesting psychological thriller and case study. Tippi Hedren gives a wow performance that is terrifyingly real. See more jimmy b @VictorTalkingMachine Feb 14, 2025 We love "Marnie" and have seen it multiple times. Tippi deserved an Oscar nomination but Hitchcock refused to campaign as punishment. She rebuked his blatant sexual advances and her career shortented. However, it's a given she retained her moral character throughout it all. See more Alain E @AlainE Nov 25, 2024 The psychology today appears dated, but the movie remains worthwhile with a young Sean Connery as American businessman instead of in the service of the Queen. The office girl who steals the money here, does better than the one in Psycho. Only a horse has an untimely death. Competent acting and good color photography. Including a Lincoln Continental with the “suicide “ doors. See more Adam C @RT72632244 Oct 13, 2024 If "Psycho" got "The Color of Night" pregnant, their baby would be "Marnie."
