David P @RT09473903 Jul 18 One of the many movies of the 90's about a teacher making an impact on their students. The spin here is the students are Army recruits pushed through a failed education system. The teacher, played by Danny DeVito, is a feisty ad executive who lost his job and takes on the class. This movie has heart and humor with an emotional depth most films lack. The supporting cast with the likes of Gregory Hines, Stacy Dash, Mark Wahlberg, among others bring this wonderful story to life. Definitely worth a watch. While it doesn’t strive to break new ground, it doesn’t need to; its charm lies in the simple and sincere presentation of its themes—themes that may be lost on a pretentious or cynical audience. Among films about teachers, it shares more DNA with To Sir, with Love and Dead Poets Society than with Dangerous Minds or Freedom Writers. It focuses on the transformative power of education and human connection rather than gritty realism or overt social commentary. Yes, Bill both saves and is saved by his students, but he never set out to accomplish either salvation. It is predictable, but sweet—a heartfelt film that resonates through its sincerity rather than its ambition.
