Sure, it is a little formulaic, with the usual sprinkling of overly dark spaces, flashing strobe lights and cliche jump scares, but it achieves what so many other sequels fail to achieve: it extends the underlying storyline. The central idea that the cursed VHS tape gets transferred onto digital media is a clever one, and brings to movie into the modern era. The casting is solid, as is the acting and direction. Johnny Galecki's performance is great. Vincent D'Onofrio, one of the most underrated actors of modern times, is terrific as the priest Galen Burke. Matilda Lutz does a solid job in her role as Julia, but does not stand out from the ensemble. The script needed improving, feeling slow-moving and unoriginal at times. See more Blu B @RT43513976 Apr 21 The title doesn't even make any sesne. There's only one ring still. So you know were in trouble right off the bat when they can't get that right. Terrible acting overall. there dull, don't have any chemistry, some are sleepwalking, and the dialouge is just terrible. It's literally just plot expose and restating what we just saw happen on screen. Literally it spells out half the things that go on because were idiots I guess. D'Onofrio is the only trying but the character he's given just isn't that good. The main girl also is just super forgettable as well. The music is boring, generic and forgettable. Everything else is terrible. It looks so lifeless and dull and as we get the closer to the end, the more dark and hard to see this becomes. The direction is so basic as well with maybe one or two nice shots the entire time. The death blows here that send this into the abyss is the fact it isn't scary at all and any attempt it makes is just poorly done jumpscares or pointless scenes like her getting stuck in the tomb. Literally adds nothing to the plot and isn't scary at all. The journey tracking down the origins of the tape is so boring and pointless to the ultimate conclusion here of the girl being reborn into the new girl (screw spoilers. This isn't worth it) Like it makes no sense the ending and just comes out of nowhere. so on top of being super repetitive and doing everything we seen in the last two films and just doing it very poorly, the way it uses those aspects makes no freakin sense. For like 75% of the runtime it's just a slog and slowly goes downhill but in the final 20 or so it just ramps up and floors it downhill becoming incoherent at times, jumpy, and again with a crappy finale that makes no sense whatsoever.
