Critics Consensus

Shopgirl is precariously slight, but it has some intriguing moments, and Danes is luminous.

Steve Martin's script sneers at the vanity of fake LA girls and their plastic surgery. He is in no position to sneer.

For most women, finding a pair of black gloves on their doorstep would signal "Boston Strangler" rather than "man of my dreams!" and it is this sense of unintentional creepiness that asphyxiates Shopgirl.

Shopgirl stands out as an elegant work, one that provides a welcome look at love, romance, and heartbreak without the encumbrances of the usual Hollywood folderol.

...the conclusion feels borrowed from Woody Allen's oeuvre... I suspect [Anand] Tucker had Annie Hall in mind.

Danes and Schwartzman brilliantly perform against the icky subtext of their not-so-cute meet. Jeremy works because he doesn't appear to have an agenda.

A decent little romantic comedy with maybe a bit more of a philosophical flourish than most. Well acted, modestly funny.

My theory--this is Steve Martin's fifty something fantasy that he wrote between marriages. His blind spot is that he comes across as creepy. Story line is one star, but I gave an extra star so the review doesn't appear bitter.

Not a bad movie, but this Steve Martin project does come across as being quite creepy.

Sometimes I feel like critics just love a nice glass of wine to go along with a boring film . Acting was fine but that’s it . 1.8. Why did they gotta make Steve Martin such a prick you could tell it was unnatural for him . I feel like the goal was to try to make it kinda a gatsby esque film but they failed

Steve Martin has this subtle and nuanced way of being provactive and agile in his criticism while also allowing room for the human elements of life to play out. i think it's a raw and stunning portrayal of desire, learning and disapointment wrapped around beautiful performances.
