Smarting from a romantic breakup, macho police Sgt. Joe Bomowski (Sylvester Stallone) gets a cross-country visit from his mother, Tutti (Estelle Getty). Her misguided efforts to help only fray his nerves, but that doesn't stop her from nagging Joe to be more open about his feelings toward his ex-girlfriend and current boss, Lt. Gwen Harper (JoBeth Williams). When Tutti witnesses a brutal multiple murder, she takes her meddling to the extreme by tagging along to help her son solve the case.

Critics Consensus

Thoroughly witless and thuddingly unfunny, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot gives its mismatched stars very little to work with - and as a result, they really don't work.

Compared with many films around at the moment, this comedy shows some imagination and is mildly entertaining.

Stallone has developed into an accomplished comedy actor, knowing to react to situations rather than cause them. Getty has the role of her lifetime, spouting one-liners with fine precision.

Most of the blame for this unimaginative effort can be attributed to the script, but Spottiswoode's flat direction doesn't help.

A refreshing reminder that sometimes movies can be everything they need to be by offering nothing more than a hairbrained setup or a particularly delicious cast pairing, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot delivers exactly what it promises, and delightfully so.

Stallone may be too dippy and Getty's character over-exaggerated and only marginally charming, but the chemistry between the leads is generally agreeable.

Honestly, this movie should've won an Academy award for best picture, best actress (Estelle Ghetty) and best actor (Sylvester Stallone). It also should've won an Emmy for Best screenplay and best director. The movie was so well written and expertly acted, it should've lasted at least 4 more hours. It was the funniest movie ever created and the special effects were amazing! It should be re-released in theaters again it's so good!
