Critics Consensus

Reese Witherspoon is charming enough, but the road to Alabama is well-traveled.

Would be an unendurable viewing experience for this ultra-provincial New Yorker if 26-year-old Reese Witherspoon were not on hand to inject her pure fantasy character, Melanie Carmichael, with a massive infusion of old-fashioned Hollywood magic.

It's as preposterous and phony as a Confederate C-note, but Reese Witherspoon has so much natural beauty, talent and charm she guarantees more fun than the day the hogs ate Willie.

Even with its flaws, Sweet Home Alabama remains charming, delightful, and driven by strong chemistry.

...[Reese Witherspoon's] presence on screen is one of the main attractions of this barely convincing revival of the basic formulas of the romance novel. [Full review in Spanish]

The joy of this tidy little comedy is not in the ending, but in spending time with the totally endearing, spiky but sweet, Witherspoon and the excellent eccentrics who surround her.

Underneath a charming, funny, and romantic movies lives a sweet story of first love experiencing loss, career aspirations, separate journeys and then realignment to true love.

This is not a satisfying movie in the slightest. I don't know what it was trying to achieve as you are forced to watch the main character be the most unlikable, horrible person imaginable. I could tell exactly where the movie was going from the start, and although I didn't want to believe that the main character would be so rotten to such a sweet guy, I was correct. Wouldn't even ironically watch again.

It’s charming and heartwarming. Yeah, it’s not a very good “movie”, but I always watch it when it comes on. Witherspoon carries.
