Critics Consensus

The Great Mouse Detective may not rank with Disney's classics, but it's an amiable, entertaining picture with some stylishly dark visuals.

Older kids may be less enthused by this mousy story, though parents, particularly Basil Rathbone fans, will marvel at the accuracy with which this sophisticated homage hits Holmes.

There's no need for details - you know his methods, Watson - but suffice it to say that The Great Mouse Detective's few tunes are unmemorable and all the action (aside from the inventive chase sequences) is snooze-worthy.

"The Great Mouse Detective" reflects the energy and enthusiasm of a talented group of young artists stretching their wings for the first time.

Especially entertaining is Vincent Price, who imbues the voice of dastardly Prof Ratigan with just the right amount of ham.

Lesser Disney animated fare is bolstered by Vincent Price as the villainous Ratigan. All too familiar ground is covered in this Sherlock Holmes-ish story but it's also not that long.

Sorry in advance to all the people who love this movie, perhaps you see something in it that I do not, but this is one of my least favorite Disney movies. The characters are not very likable, the songs are horrible, and the humor is too slapstick for my taste. It is very dark and scary, and features too much drinking and smoking and vice for young children. The "mystery" was confusing and underwhelming, and Basil’s "intelligent" solutions to mysteries are mostly pulled out of thin air. Overall very dark and boring. Definitely would not recommend.

Uma das produções mais sem brilho e esquecíveis da Disney. Falta ritmo na investigação, falta carisma nos protagonistas e sobra uma fórmula arrastada que não consegue empolgar nem como mistério e nem como aventura infantil.
