Disaster strikes on Aug. 5, 2010, as a copper and gold mine collapses in Chile, trapping 33 men underground. With more than 2,000 feet of rock in their way, members of a rescue team work tirelessly for 69 days to save the seemingly doomed crew. Beneath the rubble, the miners begin an epic quest to survive, contending with suffocating heat and the need for food and water. With family, friends and the rest of the world watching, it becomes a race against time and a true test of the human spirit.

Critics Consensus

The 33 offers an appropriately inspirational account of real-life heroism, but its stirring story and solid performances are undermined by a flawed focus and an overreliance on formula.

While the elements that do not work frustrate, the stuff revolving around those who truly deserve to be labeled as heroes thankfully never does. Go to Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Scroll.in Jun 21, 2016
There is plenty of drama and suspense in this true-life story, but the screenplay relies too heavily on formula and is swathed in Hollywood sentimentality. Go to Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Jun 12, 2016

Based on a real story that happened in Chile (filmed in part here and with some Chilean actors), this is the worst case of whitewashing in recent years, as well as being the film that contains Juliette Binoche’s worst performance ever, and that’s a sin. Riggen certainly still employs a plentiful creative license to dramatize and compress this trauma into two hours, but the lionizing on one end and the vilifying on the other is remarkably low. Go to Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Aug 25, 2022

“The 33” hits nearly every disaster movie tick. I still enjoyed the film overall, but I kept waiting for it to do something unique. It never quite does. Go to Full Review Read all reviews
