Bear B @BearB 5d The low rating of this film reflects general frustration with the concept of a Bourne-less addition to the franchise and a reflexive rejection of an expanded Treadstone universe, but the movie itself is well executed, well acted, and a fun, compelling watch. I predict an eventual “fresh” consensus once the emotional dust has settled. Ratings are a funny and fickle phenomenon. See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 28 The Bourne Legacy has an interesting idea in expanding the program mythology beyond Jason Bourne. Showing that Treadstone and Blackbriar were part of a larger system gives the franchise a broader conspiracy, and the enhanced-agent angle shows how many people were being used, controlled, and discarded. Jeremy Renner gives Aaron Cross a solid center. He is more verbal, desperate, and emotionally accessible than Bourne, while still being highly capable. Rachel Weisz also gives the movie needed humanity as Marta, a smart and terrified doctor realizing the world she worked in is far more dangerous than she understood. The Alaska opening gives the film a rugged, isolated start, and the Manila finale adds scale, even if the motorcycle chase runs too long. The problem is that Jason Bourne’s absence is impossible to ignore. Cross’s medication hook is interesting, but it does not hit as hard as Bourne’s identity and guilt. There is plenty to like, but it feels like a shadow of the trilogy. See more Frans B @FransB Jul 7 Brilliant. Enjoyed it as much, if not slightly more, than previous iterations. Intelligently written and directed. Great cinematography and visually more stunning than most. Jeremy Renner shines properly and convincing in character with his gritty and energetic portrayal. Rachel Weisz and rest of stellar cast all really excels in character. Very fast pace and adrenaline filled as is befitting of the Bourne franchise. Lots of action, new innovations in chase and close combat scenes, lots of drama, suspense, confusion, twists, mystery, intrigue and raw emotion. Very captivating, entertaining and memorable. Epic See more Patrick A @Patty505 May 20 The most compelling part of this movie is the performances turned in by Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz. With a pedestrian script and an obvious plot line that lacks imagination, Renner turns in a highly compelling performance as does Weisz albeit to a somewhat lesser extent. Still, the movie deserves much more "props" than the critics and many viewers have been willing to bestow. A slowish start to the film belies the amount of momentum it picks up and maintains once it gets going. I’m personally baffled by the low grades from the critics. This movie is a great watch and a film I’ve rewatched multiple times. Edward Nortonis fantastic as the nemisis a part he plays with subdued fervor. Those three actors alone elevate this film to at least a 3.5 I mean c’mon now each of them even with a difficult script turn in high quality performances. Anyway, this film deserves more love.
