Well-acted with an ever lingering sense of dread, it certainly holds your attention, if you're patient. See more Diamond W @DiamondWitch 10/31/2023 Easily one of the best movies about witchcraft ever released. The story of a young witch fully realizing her unique force and potential. Her frail, pixie-like beauty, juxtaposed against the rugged, pallid, rural landscape, effectively cloaks her emerging and devastating power of retribution. All those who would impede, manipulate or control her are consumed by despair or destroyed. Her acolytes are rewarded with fruitful abundance. It is the quintessence of witchcraft. The theme of "sacrifice" is explored thoroughly as it relates culture, family, and faith to subconscious ambition and desire, ultimately culminating in an horrendous sacrifice with equally horrifying results. The plot is concise and methodical with every action accounted for. The cinematography is loaded with artful composition and appropriately bleak atmosphere. The acting is convincing and engaging with what appear to be many skillful improvisations. The depictions of ritual and spell-casting are mesmerizing, haunting and sublime without the overly fantastical, effects-driven elements which can often reduce similar films to campy irrelevance. This earthy, spooky, mystical gem gets richer with each viewing. Awesome! See more John A @RT37217148 07/03/2023 Having read the "professional" critics, I can only assume they are enamoured of the director's new clothes. Despite good cinematography, acting and atmospherics it was a mish mash of events that had no coherence. They story is the main element. Bad acting, filming, etc can still make a cult classic, but this one will fade into obscurity. I cared about the mother and the husband but not the central character. Why? Because she was just nasty. No ultimate motive was clear, in fact, nothing was really clear. In the end, who cares. See more 03/26/2021 A failure to lay even the most basic background resulted in what was at best a mediocre B-movie. Even the acting couldn't save this schizophrenic storyline.
