From the start, the heavy blue and dark color grading makes many scenes difficult to follow, creating confusion instead of atmosphere. Rather than feeling mysterious or haunting, the visuals become distracting and overwhelming. The editing only worsens this problem, with abrupt transitions and poorly paced scenes that prevent any real suspense from building. The acting is mostly flat and uninspired, making it hard to connect with the characters or care about their journey. Emotional moments rarely land, and the lack of believable performances drains the story of impact. The screenplay is equally messy, jumping between ideas without fully developing any of them. The mythology is unclear, and the narrative never settles into a strong direction. While there are glimpses of interesting concepts, they are never fully realized. The reason it got brought down to 4 stars is because like was said...needs more back story info, mythology, Grimm, lore, wtfe, just a whole lot of more. The reason I should be dropping to 3 stars is because not only did it not have more but it left us on a cliffhanger which is more annoying, especially with not enough in beginning, during (explaining & linking), then you gon leave me on a cliffhanger & not finish or give me a part two finishing wtf?! Thus, making it a waste of time on a what could have been imo successful movie. If not for all that nonsense I would have given 5 stars & enjoyed it! I started out like its gon be bad to heeey!! Surprisingly, better than thought to wtf just happened?! Mannequins were creepy af, actors did pretty good, hauntingly beautiful house, & Briar was amazing both eerily, but also beautifully, the mythology was good start but more explaining, especially those unfamiliar with Quran, really needed more explaining in those areas, story seemed rlly good to me, but then to the leaving me hanging 🤬...give me a part 2 & I will gladly bring up my rating! I wanted so badly to give 5 stars hoping for part 2 & would have if...I decided bring back up from 3 to 4 stars cuz not enough credit given by others! See more Adrian M @blissyu2 09/23/2023 I love fairy tales, especially when they are done right, especially if they are based on established mythology, and this one certainly is. Original fairy tales were meant to be scary, but Walt Disney ruined them by making them fun and child-friendly. They were meant to be warnings to children to do the right thing, a bit like how the Bible of Christianity or religious books from any other religions do - because if you don't listen to the lessons from the fairy tale then you are doomed to have bad things happen to you. So this is a fairy tale horror story, which is as they should be. In fact, we should go back through all of the fairy tales and make them all into horror movies. Now, this does deviate a bit from the source material, but it is still generally true to it. It's not inconsistent with the source material so much as it adds to it. And it was beautiful. It showed the beauty of the Sleeping Beauty story while adding to it with a dark side as well. Only one person dies in the whole movie, and even that one is largely off-screen, so this is more scary than terrifying, more unnerving than truly horrifying. It is how good horror should be. Yes, there were one or two minor jump scares, but that was not where it was from. It added a world of mysticism of it. I note, for those struggling authors out there, that this is based on a book that had to be self-published and doesn't seem to have sold very many copies, a short 56-page novella that doesn't seem to have sold a single copy on Amazon by an author who doesn't even have her own Wikipedia page - yet the movie does. And it was seriously good. It opened itself up for a sequel, but perhaps there won't be any. We were left having to guess what might happen afterwards. Apparently a TV series was meant to be based on this but I have seen no evidence that this has ever actually occurred. I am grateful for movies with these open endings, the old-style before we insisted on knowing what happens, and I am grateful for situations where the bad guys kind of win. Oh, and also I liked that the victims were not stupid, that they went to great lengths to be as smart as possible, and it actually kind of worked too, which is what we want to see. It was brilliant, unpredictable, and very underrated. The issue seems to be that people want these nice, neat endings where we know every intricacy of what is going to happen. This movie doesn't have that, so people can't be bothered with it. But they should. This is what fairy tale horror should be.
