jan A @RT56343825 Jul 13, 2026 While possibly no remake or new iteration can best the original, this is a wonderful take on that film. Toby Jones is such an under-rated gem of an actor and delivers a terrific performance here. It's a fascinating, expanded take on the original. The recurring theme of 'let me call you sweetheart", sung within the confines of a half-moon is so coolly evoked in the last scene, as Mayhew succumbs to the view of his internal 'jury'. I do have to wonder if the true criminals also pay the price for their crimes. It's at least implied that happens. And what of Alice? Is there a happily-ever-after for her? I don't suppose so. Altogether, very well done. I wonder why more folks (including critics) have not seen and reviewed. See more Read all reviews
