Based on Virginia Woolf's funniest novel, Night & Day is an un-romantic comedy about a passionate astronomer Katharine Hilbery who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage. Fun and contemporary in tone, this refreshing film showcases an ensemble of humouros performances against the ravishing backdrop of London in 1910, advances in science and technology and crumbling Edwardian patriarchy. Virginia's story is as relevant to today as it ever was: women balancing romantic love with careers!

Critics Consensus

Virginia Woolf's Night & Day is a delightfully offbeat and bittersweet period romance that balances sharp comedy with a thoughtful exploration of love, independence, and female empowerment.

A basic idea, but a moving one nevertheless.

There’s so much here, but capturing Woolf’s mosaic style, her urgency and deep insight into the human condition is a bit like catching fireflies in a jar. In this case, the result is a bit hit-or-miss.

This is an elegant, thoughtful, and quietly rebellious film that offers a compelling reminder that the struggle to live authentically never goes out of style.

A strong cast and striking visuals keep this spirited drama moving, even through occasional plot lulls and generic speeches.

Overall, this is a very solidly produced effort. I loved the unexpectedly intimate cinematography by Sebastian Edschmid; the production design by David Hindle is exquisite.

[Viewers] will have done themselves a disservice if they believe Woolf to have been so toothless, so milquetoast, as this movie... Find a $5 paperback of Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day [instead].

It explores the complex themes of gender inequality with humor and a sense of hope. A light heartedness which is increasingly hard to find in this tough world we are experiencing right now . It was heartwarming.
