Critics Consensus

Though Hugh Jackman gives his all, he can't help X-Men Origins: Wolverine overcome a cliche-ridden script and familiar narrative.

Revenge soon grips Logan when his love is taken away, but Tsotsi director Gavin Hood seems bored by the sibling rivalry; even the Frankensteinian weaponizing of a human body feels rushed.

It’s violent and cruel and shrouded in darkness, filled with the complicated backstories and the weirdly incestuous origin details from the comic books that [are] confusing and confounding and no substitute for a story.

Even when the hand-to-hand combat looks impressive, the stunts get far-fetched, pushing the special effects to the limit.

Kind of unbelievable how badly they messed this up. Hilariously bad effects that look like placeholders, plodding story, infamously ridiculous take on Deadpool. Liev Schreiber is the only one that comes out unscathed.

Very well done as origin storytelling goes. Hugh Jackman brings the swagger and enigma. Liev Schreiber always makes for one real bad guy. Whole cast very capable and excels in character. Lots of background and insight into Wolverine past. Great cinematography. Essential addition to the X-Men saga and MCU as a whole. Non-stop action, lots of drama, emotion, suspense, twists, intrigue and suspense. Entertaining and captivating

This movie is great. Hugh Jackman is fantastic, the action scenes are good but deadpool is terrible and the CGI is bad. 7/10

Rated: 5.7/10 ⭐️ I wanted some classic mutant action to hype up the new Wolverine game. I like this; it’s a messy but nostalgic ride with Jackman doing his best. What Worked: • Jackman and Schreiber have a super intense chemistry I totally dug. • The opening montage of them fighting through wars is ridiculously cool. • Seeing Reynolds step into Wade Wilson’s shoes gave me a nostalgic kick. The Friction: • The CGI looks rubbery, especially during fights and those weird claws. • The third act loses its emotional thread and becomes a chaotic mess. • What they did to Deadpool at the end honestly felt like a massive letdown. Verdict: I like this. Watch to see Jackman tear things up. Skip if bad CGI annoys you.
