Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann, an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria's beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoenberg, Maria embarks upon a lengthy legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria considers them national treasures.

Critics Consensus

Woman in Gold benefits from its talented leads, but strong work from Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds isn't enough to overpower a disappointingly dull treatment of a fascinating true story.

It's an underdog story tailor-made for the movies, devoid of surprises but touching all the same.

It won't do the film any harm at the box office that Helen Mirren twinkles indomitably. She's as good as ever, but really - of all the things you want to see Dame Helen doing indomitably, twinkling isn't among them.

Helen Mirren is, of course, a wonderful actress, and she brings dignity to the marvellously Euro-chic Maria, but even she can't soar above the script which veers from speechifying to banalities.

Frankly, this is all too easy and too simple for Helen Mirren and company. Despite attempts at provoking family and ancestral themes, the drama is rarely substantial enough to stir the audience.

The history touched upon in Woman in Gold is laden with such rich and fraught complexities. It is a pity the film does as little as it does to present or convey them.

Woman in Gold is just but one story in the ongoing battle for the return of stolen artwork during the Holocaust.

The storytelling was superb, keeping me on the edge of my seat. I paused the movie at the beginning to check the cast, because I didn't believe that was Helen Mirren. I was thoroughly convinced that I was watching an elderly Jewish woman tell her story. I've never seen Ryan Reynolds in anything before. He and the rest of the cast did a fine job, especially Olivia Silhavy as the Austrian minister. I was glad to see her pompous mask slip if just briefly, as justice for the injured party was meted out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Helen Mirren was superb as always. I couldn’t fault the performances of the rest of the cast. The story kept me gripped to see if she got the paintings back.

The critics are wrong for giving it a bad rating. I loved it! Suspenseful, dramatic, great acting, great touching story. I would watch it again.
