Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been watching from the beginning or just tuning in for this season, Dark Winds is the best hidden gem TV show of 2026 so far, and it’s hard to imagine another show unseating its traditional structure and innovative story.

While the fourth season of Dark Winds is taking a chance by going off the rez, seeing Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito facing big changes brings interesting context to what might be normally be considered a standard police thriller case.

If old Sundance [Robert Redford] was still kicking, he’d surely approve of this new season because it’s a fitting homage to his ‘70s heyday and builds upon the gritty, rollickingly adventurous tone of that bygone era.

I have to admit I have some mixed feelings about this show. I grew up in Northern Arizona in a county that was about 20% Native American. Mostly Navajo and Hopi. And during the same time period. So I'm familiar with the background here. I also have read Tony Hillerman's books, all of them. I love them partly because the depiction of the area is almost perfect and fits the experiences I had growing up there. I was looking forward to seeing his novels recreated in video. But from the first show on, they messed with his material so much that they completely changed from the original. Each of the characters are variations, and also a combination of different elements of each other. This makes it confusing to watch at first. Nevertheless, they have been able to capture a lot of the original flavor. And have used a lot of Hillerman's plot devices in the stories. They have also introduced a couple that ring badly, but overall the show seems to capture the original without being the original

Seems like it's trying to dig in to the character's relationships and feelings. Just not buying it so far. I like McClarnon but the pining for his wife is getting dull. And a female assassin in the 70's? At least find an actress who can act..
