Filmmakers Tasha Van Zandt and Sebastian Zeck weave an engaging narrative of one of the pioneers in the field of deep sea marine biology with her current goal of documenting and capturing the flashback phenomenon of bioluminescence. This film truly captures the life changing experience of being able to see life in the ocean 3,000 feet below sea level right alongside Edie, a spectacle that you need to see for yourself to believe. This film not only illuminates her lifetime work, but her incredible discoveries along the way. It is a captivating story and a privilege to share a glimpse into her journey. I was amazed by how little of the seafloor has actually been explored - and by the prevalence of bioluminescence and the role it plays as a kind of language in the deep ocean. The film does a particularly nice job of balancing Edie Widder’s own life and experiences with the larger science and wonder of the natural world. The images of bioluminescent creatures emerging from complete darkness are extraordinary, but what stayed with me most was the sense of curiosity the film inspires.
