Ted B @Movieaddicted 1d 3.0 stars; By today's standards, not a classic. However, as a 1941 release, pretty terrifying. The special effects were good for the time. As for acting, the film introduces Lon Chaney Jr. to lead horror roles—eventually The Wolfman Series. Not a bad start in this film. I enjoyed it as a bit of a science fiction movie more than anything else. Most likely, I will give it another viewing a few more times just for the entertainment factor alone. The slow pacing at the beginning, and too many unecessary dog scenes, torpedo any build up of suspense. Film does get better in last half hour, but too little , too late. See more 09/28/2012 Chaney and Atwill are excellent, the plot (basically a derivation of the Frankenstein mythos) is fun, and it moves at a quick pace, cramming in all kinds of sordid and pseudoscience-y elements into a 68 minute package.
