Critics Consensus

A twisted memory play whose labyrinthine structure can be as disorienting for the audience as it is for its heroine, Affection's most lasting impression may be Jessica Rothe's terrific lead performance.

This nifty little movie keeps you guessing and when it eventually shows its hand, there’s still plenty of mileage left in the characters. Go to Full Review

The lensing and production design are similarly generic, save for a handful of inspired shots that, again, provide glimmers of a clearer vision than the unevenly applied one we ultimately get here. Go to Full Review

It's a heartbreaking situation, well-acted by Rothe, but it doesn't leave the narrative much room to manoeuvre. Go to Full Review

For a 90-minute film, Affection crawls, squandering the many opportunities to sidestep its messaging and deliver solid scares and thrills. The premise was there, but too many misfires stop this film from hitting the mark. Go to Full Review

Meza proves adept at creating suspense and unease, but Affection is eventually betrayed by its own internal logic that at times seems inconsistent and difficult to follow. Go to Full Review

JDub May 8 I liked that it told a good story without hitting hard on the gore. The opening setup definitely kept you guessing. We had questions after the movie was over because it didn't try to explain everything which was great. The end was satisfying. Good story and the scenes looked great. Worth seeing! I think it is an easy one to rewatch which I rarely feel with movies these days. See more Les N @Vegas628 1d I'm sure it has it's good points. See more Jason M @Nautius 2d Easily one of the most idiotic movies I've seen in a while. Derivative story, absurd plot, laughable performance by the main character, predictable ending, and plot holes everywhere. Not sure how this got a good critical rating. Best to avoid. See more Farah R. @Farah 3d Affection is an effective sci-fi psychological horror that successfully blends genre elements into a unique experience. Jessica Rothe’s performance anchors the film. She skillfully portrays her character’s paranoia alongside child actor Julianna Layne’s terrific acting. Despite some flaws, it’s an intriguing movie and the use of practical effects is reason enough to watch. See more PVD H @PVD_Horror May 21 Affection has some fascinating themes and premise, however, suffers from a lack of clarity at times, leaving what feels like a lot of unanswered questions to things that feel hard to ignore. With that being said Jessica Roth puts in a strong performance, in many ways carrying the film and being a strong contributor to the viewers questioning of the moral dilemmas presented. The setting of the film is highly contained which helps and hurts the film, helping it as it keeps the film feeling claustrophobic and maintaining focus on the characters present, hurting it as it feels less understandable that any questions would be left unanswered. With thst being said this is a thought provoking film with strong performances and an overall entertaining viewing experience. See more TJDS10 T @TJDS10 May 11 While the film shows its cards a bit too early, and I wish it had committed to the psychological elements more, it's still never stops being an intriguing ride with creative twists anchored by strong performances.
