The Coen Brothers create a tense atmosphere inside a single rundown Hollywood hotel, where writer Barton Fink struggles with severe writer’s block while everything around him starts to feel increasingly surreal and off-kilter. John Turturro delivers a perfect performance as a man trapped inside his own ego and creative pressure, while John Goodman adds an unpredictable energy that shifts between friendly and disturbing in an instant. The film blends dark humor with psychological tension in a way that keeps you uneasy but also strangely entertained. It’s smart, weird, and deeply symbolic without feeling empty. With trademark wit, economy, and an eye for the odd, the story of a writer facing writer's block in a Los Angeles hotel is funny and moving all this time later. Beautifully staged, and brilliantly shot by Roger Deakins, the performances are terrific - especially from John Goodman in one of his most iconic roles. Reaction to working in Hollywood? crisis of faith? So. The Coen bros were my favourites growing up- swear by. I then... had to account for myself. Couldn't. Swear at. If I'm being serious, and it's a difficult thought to express... I view their work less as a completed work, more as their telling us how they've been doing, suffused with what they've been reading; aaaand. I just find the contempt a bit stifling, sorry. Oeuvre. Making crime novels into film- Dashiell Hammet (Glass Key/ Miller's Crossing), Raymond Chandler (Long Goodbye/Big Lebowski), James M Cain (Postman always.../Man who was not...) , ... Fargo, Blood Simple. Making novels ?- True Grit; No Country for Old Men. Inside Llelwyn Davis, O Brother. A serious man. Barton Fink. Trying to be funny / screwball ? comedy- and just about succeeding; Hudsucker Proxy , Raising Arizona. And failing miserably: The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading. See more Alejandro E @Alex970 Jan 23 The story of a playwright and his struggle with the blank page is like a love letter, synchronised, to creative block, the surreal and B movies. This is one of those films that you can't help but love, even though you don't understand half of what's happening on screen, or because of that final act that leaves you with more questions than answers. It would be a shame to miss it.
