Cox and Cumming can’t save it. Neither can Henderson. It’s almost painful how flimsy the characters are, how familiar all the emotional beats. Go to Full Review

For all the many tropes, there are clever curveballs in the sibling dynamic. And with Cox playing against type, the whole thing ends up a wry rebuke to the grim dynastic wrangling of Succession. Go to Full Review

It can be a bit soppy, sometimes resembling Sunday-night TV comfort food, but this big-hearted picture wins you over, and there are certainly some marvellous panoramic shots of the Highlands. Go to Full Review

Created by David Ashton and co-written with Jeff Murphy, it never gets under the skin of the story and there seems little depth to any character. Most are walking Scottish cliches, which, in 2026, feels excruciating. Go to Full Review

Cox and Henderson do their substantial best with the lacklustre material, but Cumming forgets to act his emotions, opting to semaphore them instead. His woefully hammy performance sums up the entire picture. Go to Full Review

‘…Glenrothan is a quaint, old fashioned and agreeably lightweight directorial debut for Brian Cox that will go down best with those, at home or abroad, who are lucky enough to have a little Scottish blood in their veins….’ Go to Full Review

David T @DavidTucker 15h It is hugely annoying that, with the incredibly high level of talent involved in this, that they still moved forward with a script like this. 97 minutes of my life I will never get back. See more Jim A @Jimabeau 17h I'm Scottish. My toes curled so much I had to kick my shoes off. The best argument against nationalism I can think of! I love Coxy and Cumming but, lads, no. See more Ruth S @RT27565639 19h Glenrothan is a beautifully crafted, deeply comforting film that feels like a warm Scottish cuddle from start to finish. At its heart is a standout performance from Alexandra Wilkie, who brings a quiet intensity and authenticity that completely draws you in. She captures every subtle emotion with ease, marking her as a rising star to watch. The cinematography is stunning, with Scotland’s landscapes adding a soft, atmospheric beauty to every scene. It’s gentle, sincere, and genuinely moving without ever feeling forced. Glenrothan is a rare film — intimate, uplifting, and quietly unforgettable. See more Alexandra W @RT82152144 19h This movie was so beautiful!! See more Christine B @RT59095429 1d I enjoyed the music and the scenery particularly. It was a lovely way to spend an evening Some of the themes may be familiar but not necessarily tropes that we see often such as the value of community and balancing duty with individual wishes . Brian Cox was completely believable as a sad man who had done his duty but without the communication skills to influence his personal life. Alan Cummings character was understandable though the ending was more of a nice feel than it probably needs to be. See more Read all reviews
