Actor Langston Stanfield (Marc Maron) has led a vain, shallow, and narcissistic life marked by five ex-wives, a stalled film career, and a daughter he never met. Now sixty, he is a man who has spent his life chasing false idols without ever noticing the cost. When out-of-the-blue he is told he has six months to live, unlike others who might reflect, reconnect and repent, Langston does something else entirely. He becomes consumed by a single absurd question: "When I die will I be included in the Academy Awards' In Memoriam montage?" For Langston, this is the only immortality that matters. As he sets out on his misguided journey, Langston is forced to revisit his many failures. Supported by his long-time friend and manager Walter Zith (Michael McKean) and bounced between the formidable women in his orbit, including his therapist (Lily Gladstone), two ex-wives (Judy Greer and Sharon Stone) and his daughter (Talia Ryder), Langston becomes a man trying to complete a Hail Mary in the waning days of a misspent life. In the end, In Memoriam asks whether a man this lost can find his way -- and whether finding it this late is enough.

The relationship between Langston and Maura becomes the true heart of the film. If you were tuning in for Maron and his solo journey, watch the duo and see Ryder steal their scenes and shine. Go to Full Review

In what could have been a one-joke premise though instead turns out to be a sharp character study of a man nearing the end and finding out the real meaning of life before his hits the end credits. Go to Full Review

Writer-director Rob Burnett has a keen sense of the industry he’s hilariously satirizing, but he also knows his story tropes and how to invert them when necessary. And as crazy as things get (and they do) nothing ever feels inauthentic. Go to Full Review

Burnett’s ingenious premise is enough to lay the groundwork for a heartwarming film. Still, the comedy wears thin under the drama’s reliance on convention, which the film resorts to so often. Go to Full Review

It blends humor with genuine self-examination, asking what kind of legacy truly matters and whether it’s ever what we expect. Go to Full Review

Balancing acerbic comedy and frank drama, “In Memoriam” initially seems to be an all-too-specific series of Hollywood-related jokes, allowing the universality to creep up and surprise you. Go to Full Review
