Critics Consensus

Aside from a shaky final act, Insidious is a very scary and very fun haunted house thrill ride.

Director James Wan here proves himself very adept at building dramatic tension and making you anxious about the things going on in your peripheral vision. Go to Full Review

If the film was attempting to be more than just a horror movie, it doesn't work on that level either. Go to Full Review

I think one of the reasons Insidious has never quite reached the popularity (or noteriety) of the other Wan-Whannel creations is the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink scattershot approach it takes to genre. Go to Full Review

There's a handful of big, effective scares, but the tonal imbalance between the front half and back half don't really align in a satisfying way. Go to Full Review

Wan knows how to use his familiar bag of tricks to make us squirm and jump at the right moments, and today that’s rare among this brand of haunted house fright movie. Go to Full Review

Aye G 1d The start of what I consider one of the best horror franchises there is. Insidious is simple, effective horror that doesn't waste much time getting into the thick of things. It doesn't need excessive gore to scare you, instead relying on atmosphere, suspense, sound, and some genuinely great paranormal scares. It also finds a great balance with its characters. The paranormal investigators bring the necessary comedy to break up the tension without taking away from the horror, while Elise immediately becomes one of the most memorable characters in the franchise. What really elevates Insidious for me, though, is the lore. The Further, astral projection, the different entities, and all the hints scattered throughout the movie give the story more depth while leaving plenty of interesting places for future installments to go. It's simple and PG-13 enough to be a great entry-level horror movie for someone new to the genre, but it's also complex, creepy, and creative enough for a tried-and-true horror fan to love. An incredibly effective horror movie and the perfect foundation for the franchise that followed. 10/10 See more Joseph Tutorials T @OSCGJoseph 2d The story is a little weak; some of the editing is a little fast in spots, you can notice that, but besides that, this movie is really good, and why James Wan is such a great horror director 89% See more Kaillee M @kaillee Aug 1 I love the Insidious movies, genuinely scary. The plot is pretty consistent and for a 2010 movie, it definitely holds up See more Janiece P @RT59768375 Jul 31 Lame and no body cares See more Wyatt F @RT17845314 Jul 31 Despite how lackluster this franchise gets, this first film has some well-timed jumpscares and some very eerie and creepy moments. See more Par H @Parhwy Jul 29 Insidious (2010) is a 98-minute-long US horror I borrowed from my niece’s DVD collection and saw in July 2026. This film is a mess. Before I explain why, story-time. When I was about 3 or 4, my mum was tucking me into bed. As she was, I could see my bedroom window beyond and in that space was the shadow-face of a monster. I was struck mute with fear as mum continued tucking me in. That was 50+ years ago and windows at night still spook me. I deliberately watched this in the daytime; that night, it was windy as and the side gate and fence outside my bedroom window shook with the ferocity of seven demons. Back to the film. I got scared a few times (by window-looking spectres, cheap jump-scares, spooky noises). The rest is predictable and overloaded horror. The messiness is the discordant tropes and themes. The séance scene towards the end, especially the props, is ludicrous. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 5/10. See more Read all reviews
