Critics Consensus

In The Mummy Returns, the special effects are impressive, but the characters seem secondary to the computer generated imagery.

Between the thrilling action scenes, excellent chemistry between the actors, memorable soundtrack, and moments that allow us to empathise with the antagonists (!), "The Mummy Returns" turns out to be a pleasant surprise. [Full review in Spanish]. Go to Full Review

The nonstop action sequences are comparable to the original, though the timing and execution here lack the creativity and momentum needed to truly match up. Go to Full Review

Alicia U 1h The whole movie is pure gold and it was ahead of its time which is why it has endeared and remained so popular today. See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson 1d This is a good bad movie but what I expected to be a rinse & repeat sequel ends up having its own identity with plenty of memorable scenes. The story has some thoughtful progression to the characters & lore of this franchise. Lots of fast paced chase scenes & shootouts with big set pieces that all carry a tone of globe trotting adventure. Such a puzzling inconsistency of visual effects with some that look great & others that are egregiously horrid. Full of dumb fun but it’s all thin & tiresome by the third act with an excessive use of plot armor & painfully convenient writing. See more Javier P @Javichuu_ Feb 11 Same as the first one but in london and some weird jungle. Must-Watch. See more Ed R @JustcallmeER Dec 23 Though the CGI wasn't great, this series is an instant classic that MUST be watched in its entirety. See more Oliver J @Ollie1997 Nov 6 Critics Consensus: Bigger, louder, and packed to the brim with CGI spectacle, The Mummy Returns delivers plenty of popcorn thrills—but sacrifices some of the charm and balance that made the original such a buried treasure. Review: Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy Returns doubles down on everything that made its predecessor a hit—more action, more mythology, and far more digital chaos. The result is a wild, uneven adventure that’s as exhilarating as it is overstuffed. Brendan Fraser once again anchors the chaos with his effortless charisma as Rick O’Connell, and Rachel Weisz returns with even more confidence and spark as Evelyn. Their chemistry remains the heart of the film, especially as their family dynamic expands with the addition of their son, Alex. The set pieces are undeniably ambitious: blimp chases, crumbling temples, and resurrected armies all vying for attention in a breathless two-hour sprint. While the visual effects don’t always hold up—most infamously in the Scorpion King’s climactic appearance—they reflect the movie’s fearless commitment to grand spectacle. Where the film stumbles is in pacing and tone. The emotional beats that grounded the first movie often get buried beneath a sandstorm of mythology and monster mayhem. Still, for audiences seeking pure escapism, The Mummy Returns delivers with enthusiasm and heart. Verdict: A fun but frenzied sequel, The Mummy Returns may not capture all the magic of the original, but it remains a lively, globe-trotting adventure that proves sometimes bigger can still be plenty of fun—even if it’s not always better. See more Derek Sep 5 It's exactly what you'd expect of a sequel that doesn't take the original seriously. Fun, just, don't think too much. See more Read all reviews
