Wayne M @Wayne93 Mar 21 Preparation For The Next Life is an exacting and complex film about life struggles and obtaining your goals. It’s a beautiful film with authentic performances. The story concerns Aishe, an Uyghur migrant to New York, and Skinner, an Army veteran who has just returned home. Aishe works in restaurant kitchens where she struggles to make a living. She meets Skinner and they soon form a strong relationship. We learn that Skinner has quite a few psychological problems from his time in the army. Aishe is trying to find a way to become a legal citizen. This is a very tender film about human connections and working your way to a better life. It’s complex and touching in the very best way. The lead performances are great. Fred Hechinger proves his talent again, whilst Sebiye Behtiyar is stunning as Aishe. A beautiful and well realised film. I dialoghi e le situazioni che si vengono a creare sono studiati, sottili ma allo stesso tempo potenti. Non convince invece la timeline, confusa tanto da mettere in discussione alcuni comportamenti tra i protagonisti, proprio perchè non si riesce a comprendere lo stato della loro relazione. L'incipit è estremamente lento, lasciando percepire il ripetersi delle giornate frenetiche senza però svilupparne le emozioni. Il finale sfrutta la potenza delle immagini per colpire dritto al cuore, senza mezze misure, lasciando però parzialmente in sospeso le sorti di uno dei due personaggi. From the beginning, it feels more draining than engaging, never finding a rhythm that pulls the viewer in. The screenplay is overwhelmingly long and often feels inaccessible. Dialogue dominates nearly every scene, yet very little of it feels purposeful or emotionally connective. Rather than guiding the audience, the story feels scattered and distant. It’s like falling down a rabbit hole, occasionally nearing clarity before slipping back into confusion. Narratively, the film lacks momentum. There are no meaningful twists or progression, just a sense of stagnation that makes the runtime feel much longer than it is. The direction is largely to blame. The director fails to shape the material into something captivating, allowing scenes to linger without visual or emotional payoff.
