If SMASH CITY starts with a series of hoary tropes that echo dully the arc of many a film of this genre that have come before, by the end it has pulled itself together enough to deliver a climax with genuine uncertainty fueling that action.

The cinematography and editing are great, even though the cast mostly yaps. Though i wish there were less time skips between scenes. The slow motion montage was a minute or two too long. Personally i wish i could comprehend the hood language since the story was a bit hard to follow in the third act. Also what happened to the girlfriend after the event? Also where does Julian live after their family troubles? I wish there were more backstories to each character. Not surprising that the basketball dude was the most removed character from the hood life. The strip club showing up more than once especially the wide shots felt like a GTA place. The very long one shot towards the end was unnecessary and only used to justify renting out the club with the camera following darrell. Also phones were used like 4-5 times throughout the movie.

Splash City is a gritty crime movie based in Northern California. It’s raw and gritty. Had me on the edge of my seat. I would put this up there with the crime classics. A must watch.
