A flawed but ambitious film, full of potent mythic images — battling dragons; a shadowy doppelganger — but one that fails ultimately to resolve those images in a satisfying way. Go to Full Review

The painterly backdrops and detailed scenery are the highlights of an otherwise slow-moving narrative told in a staid, formal style deficient of humor or passion for the material. Go to Full Review

The ending reveals a surprise that isn't enough to be satisfying since no one has evolved and it seems this is where the movie should've started. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Brent A 1d While certainly as beautiful a film as everyone has come to expect of Ghibli, this is definitely one of their weaker films. It opens very well, but the final act goes kinda all over the place. Recommended for Ghibli die-hards, but not for first-timers. See more Kevin W @VTCOYS 58m I don’t understand the hate on Earthsea. Not Ghibli’s best, but still well done. See more Zerocool 22h I felt it was all over the place, love the art work and of course love writer and director but this one in the collection was just ok See more David C @cardo99 1d Goro doesn't have his father's whimsy, and the movie wanders a bit and lacks pacing. But it's beautiful to look at, nicely animated, and Willem Dafoe voices the extremely creepy villain with gusto. See more Lorenz V @RT81576099 2d Apparently some dislike. Liked it though. Watched it some time ago with the kids. See more Sharlene C @RT569043311289 2d It’s a nice film but it seems to take a hard turn in the middle and the ending is kinda a muddy mess. If you have to understand the book to get the movie, that’s a failure of the movie. See more Read all reviews
