Critics Consensus

Slow-building and atmospheric, The Blackcoat's Daughter resists girls-in-peril clichés in a supernatural thriller that serves as a strong calling card for debuting writer-director Oz Perkins.

I found February affecting on an emotional level as well, and will be evangelizing for it until it makes it out of the festival circuit and into theaters. Go to Full Review

There are creepy moments throughout The Blackcoat's Daughter that stick with you, truly adding to the stylistic, haunted-house atmosphere of this whole narrative. Go to Full Review

The vibe is foreboding, horrifying, creepy, just all around a feeling of dread through the entire 95 minute runtime. It is tight, it is full of suspense and grief, and it is a genius way to tell the story like writer director Oz Perkins does. Go to Full Review

Admittedly, the film's structure is more interesting than the story itself; if it had been laid out in chronological order, it wouldn't have been very interesting. But Perkins's eerie style is what sells it. Go to Full Review

Charlie A @Charlie-Chookins 21h The Blackcoat's Daughter is a difficult movie for me to rate. Religious horror doesn't work for me. The plot seems to be all over the place; I was lost for about 60% of the movie. The ending did not wrap up in a satisfying way and it was upsetting to see Emma Roberts in a movie this...messy. While some of the cinematography was very appealing, the plot really bogged this down for me. Seeing how Kathrine went from a normal girl to an empty shell of a girl in a rapid timeline with very little explanation was upsetting. This movie could've been so much more but ended up falling flat for me. The acting was good, cinematography was good, the design of the devil/demon and even the setting was good but the story, arc, and resolution left me wanting more. See more Daddy D @Drazker 21h Extremely slow burn without any real reward for the viewer, they had the budget to rope in Emma Roberts but clearly lacked the ability to complete a scene without cutting away at a critical moment just to never return to it despite the relentless time jumps. I completely understand the critic/audience gap here as some could see this as a dreadful display of loneliness, creating a situation to seek out malevolent attention. But I was personally frustrated with this movie by the end. And unfortunately for this film, I'm siding with the audience. 2/5. See more L W. @phillybird52 5d Fantastic little horror. I enjoyed this one See more Madam D @Madam1948 Feb 8 Way too slow to actually begin building a plot. Too many changes in which time lline we are seeing. See more Angelina B. @angelinabud Jan 20 It was just too slow for me. It took 50 minutes in for anything to happen See more Michael L @MikeLewis Oct 23 One of the best slow burns you’ll ever see. From the very beginning, this film is filled with dread, and it slowly carries on throughout the film to its very final shot. Ignore the mixed reviews from the audience as it’s filled with individuals who can’t sit through a movie unless it’s Michael Bay-ish levels of action from the very first frame. This is a master class of building dread and suspense. Osgoods best movie imho. See more Read all reviews
