Critics Consensus

A sly caper carried off with director Steven Soderbergh's characteristic panache, The Christophers is a superb two-hander featuring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel at their very best.

Soderbergh, who continues to be our most prolific and unpredictable filmmaker, digs his fingers into this character study with typical curiosity and confidence. Go to Full Review

The verbal parrying is pure delight, smart and sharp. It reflects a very deep understanding of the world of art, the people who create it and the complexities of maneuvering the world of critics, gallery owners, and wealthy collectors. Go to Full Review

Had The Christophers just been a cross-generational punch-up, the sort of flinty showdown designed to throw off pleasurable sparks, you’d still walk away content. It remains a conduit for two of the best performances you’ll see all year. Go to Full Review

This film is a great example of a work where less is more, and by getting out of the way of his leads, Soderbergh has found another winning formula. Go to Full Review

A delight. Julian and Lori are perfect vessels for Solomon and Soderbergh to underline their point: Get distracted by the eye-catching what on the surface, and you’ll miss the genius of the who beneath. Go to Full Review

John B 9h I cannot imagine how the critics called this no-doze affair a "witty" movie. It was dull, confusing, and ultimately pointless. The main character is an unpleasant dying artist, a role wasted on Ian McKellan, The actor who plays the forger is sometimes mildly interesting, but even she never elicits any sympathy. The ending is a mystery. An all-around terrible movie. I went, I saw, and I came away empty. See more Julie 9h Superb acting. I was pulled in by the characters. See more lawrence m 12h Extraordinary acting clever screenplay See more Ghederick Eshmont 18h Ian McKellen is given some impeccable dialogue See more Amanda C 1d Sir Ian is ALWAYS wonderful to watch. But the movie is a bit cerebral, Mikaela Coel's character is very inscrutable so her journey (the real importance of the central relationship--) wasn't clear... Also, the film indulges in stereotypes about the Art world, narcissistic artists and left us feeling unsatisfied. See more James D 1d poignant and joyful. Amazing performances by the leads. big shout out to the set decorators. See more Read all reviews
