Long before meeting Shrek, Puss in Boots, just named a hero for saving a woman from a charging bull, is run out of town on suspicion of bank robbery, even though the real villain is Puss' friend, Humpty Dumpty. Though there is still animosity between them, Puss and Humpty reunite to steal a goose that lays golden eggs. Joining them for the adventure of nine lifetimes is notorious cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws.

Puss in Boots kind of surprised me. Far more witty then I expected it to be, nicely animated and featuring a charming story of forgiveness and redemption that belies its Shrek inspired fractured fairy tale roots, this movie more than won me over.

What kids will get from it is plenty of fairly outrageous but not often witty fun with fairytale elements blended into a kind of latterday spaghetti western. For the rest of us, there is plenty of nice visual detail.

Solid Shrek spin-off improves upon the last two entries in the franchise. While it isn’t particularly deep or groundbreaking, Puss in Boots is a lot better than Shrek the Third, and a bit better than Shrek Forever After. It’s an entertaining spin-off on the titular Puss in Boots that proves him a very strong character within the franchise. A fun adventure that proves its ability to smartly riff on the fairy tale genre even as a spin-off, Puss in Boots is winningsome.
